CVE-2019-3844

When a service is created in systemd, a new user is created with a unique user ID. A user is only able to access resources assigned to its UUID. DynamicUsers are a more recent addition to systemd that attempt to improve the user process. When a service using a DynamicUser is terminated, it's UUID will also be freed, allowing a new process to claim that identifier. An issue with DynamicUser was discovered that would allow it to interact with the service that assigns UUIDs and gain additional IDs. Any resources created or used with these additional identifiers would not be removed when the service would terminate and release the original UID assigned to its DynamicUser. If a new service is created and assigned the same UID that the malicous service was given, any leftover binaries may have access to the resources of the newly created service.


This vulnerability appears to be a lapse in implementing DynamicUser. The bit no_new_privileges was in the codebase since 2012 and applied to the normal User since 2014. It's likely that this was just forgotten. The fix for this vulnerability appears to fit the environment hardening mitigation for CWE 268, as the ability to raise privileges or access ID binaries are now explicitly blocked when using a DynamicUser.
